Bookmaker William Hill set to post big profits despite snow playing havoc with this years major sporting fixtures. The December freeze caused nearly half of scheduled horse racing meetings to be prosponed.
But the firm offset the impact with a near 60% surge in snowed-in gamblers placing bets for other events online, helping boost takings 4% in December and 8% over the last three months.
Customers playing fruit machines in shops made up for a 1% drop in over-the-counter bets. Hill’s shares rose nearly 7% after it signalled full-year operating profit would be at the top of expectations.
